How Rising Lake Kwania Waters Are Turning Villages Into Islands

What the report says
Flooding linked to rising Lake Kwania waters has for years been transforming Aoa Village in Kwera Sub-county, Dokolo District, into what residents describe as an island. According to Nile Post, the water has displaced families, damaged farmland and made it harder for people to reach schools, health services, markets and safe drinking water.
The report says children in the area now begin their school day by crossing flooded stretches by canoe or on foot, while parents worry about late arrivals and missed lessons. Residents also described serious effects on livelihoods, saying gardens for staples such as cassava, maize and sweet potatoes have been submerged and that many households now have to buy food despite limited income. Local leaders said only 28 of the 88 households that once lived in Aoa remain, with others relocating to trading centres or staying with relatives.
The article adds that sanitation has been weakened because latrines collapsed, boreholes were flooded and some ancestral burial grounds are now at risk. Health access has also become more difficult, especially for pregnant women, children and older people who must cross water before traveling inland for treatment. The community recently received a canoe donated by Dokolo South MP Vincent Opito, but residents and leaders said this offers only temporary relief.
They are urging government and disaster authorities to assess the area and provide a longer-term response such as road improvements, relocation support or flood mitigation. More broadly, the case illustrates how prolonged flooding can reshape settlement patterns and deepen vulnerability in lakeside communities.
