Guns were planted in Elwelu’s home – wife
What the report says
Patricia Apolot, the wife of retired Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, has rejected claims that security forces recovered guns and ammunition from the family’s home in Soroti, saying soldiers instead planted the weapons during a raid. Her account, published by The Observer, describes an operation at the couple’s home in Awoja Parish, Soroti district, where she said security personnel — some in uniform and others in civilian clothes — arrived in the evening, questioned her about Elwelu’s whereabouts and searched the compound and house.
According to Apolot, the search turned up no firearms inside the main house, but officers later accused her of hiding weapons and focused on a locked room and the kitchen area. She said the operatives confiscated phones from her and her sisters, and she also alleged that money kept for construction work went missing during the operation. In her account, the recovered guns were not evidence of stockpiling by Elwelu, but weapons linked to soldiers previously assigned to guard him.
The dispute follows a public post by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who said security operatives had recovered arms from one of Elwelu’s homes and warned of further action. A military spokesperson, Chris Magezi, also suggested Elwelu was being held over alleged subversive activity. The government has not yet issued a detailed public explanation of Elwelu’s reported detention or the allegations surrounding the search, adding to concern and speculation in Teso.
