What the report says

The Government of Uganda and the World Bank have begun a joint review of the second phase of the Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project (DRDIP II), with the stated aim of checking progress and identifying steps to speed up delivery in refugee-hosting and transit districts. According to Nile Post, the review opened in Kampala through a Joint Implementation Support Mission led by the Office of the Prime Minister and the World Bank, and is scheduled to run until Friday, November 6.

DRDIP II is intended to help address pressure on services and natural resources in areas that host refugees. The project focuses on three main areas: building and rehabilitating infrastructure such as schools and health facilities, restoring degraded land and ecosystems, and supporting livelihoods through technical assistance and grants for income-generating activities.

The report says the programme covers 12 refugee-hosting districts, including Adjumani, Hoima, Isingiro and Yumbe, as well as six transit districts including Amuru, Kisoro and Zombo. It is expected to reach about three million people in total, including one million refugees and two million host-community members. Officials said the emphasis is now shifting from preparation to implementation so that communities can see practical results.

World Bank and government representatives described the success of the project as dependent on visible improvements in services, environmental restoration and economic opportunity. More broadly, Uganda’s refugee-hosting approach aims to share development benefits with host communities while involving refugees in local planning and service delivery.
