The university athletics department said Anderson is survived by his wife, Jan, and daughter, Erin, who were with him at the end of his life, and that his body was returned to the University of Minnesota for organ donation.

Anderson’s connection to the Gophers stretched nearly five decades. He arrived at Minnesota as a pitcher in 1974, moved into coaching after an injury ended his playing career, and became the program’s head coach in the fall of 1981 at age 26. According to the school, he retired in 2024 after 43 seasons leading the team, finishing with a 1,390-1,021-3 record. That total made him the winningest coach in Big Ten history and placed him 20th on the NCAA Division I career wins list.

Minnesota’s announcement highlighted the scale of Anderson’s tenure: 38 winning seasons, 31 seasons of at least 30 wins, 10 seasons of 40 or more wins, 19 NCAA postseason appearances and a 2018 run that included the program’s first NCAA Super Regional. He was an eight-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, and the Gophers retired his No. 14 in 2024.

University President Rebecca Cunningham, Athletics Director Mark Coyle and current head coach Ty McDevitt issued statements honoring Anderson’s influence on the school, its baseball program and generations of players. The athletics department also noted he had been selected to receive the 2027 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award.
