Giant pandas arrive in Atlanta as part of 10-year US-China agreement

Two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, have arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, as part of a 10-year loan agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association. According to Al Jazeera’s report, the animals were flown from southwestern China and landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport after a long charter trip, before being taken to the zoo.

The transfer comes after recent high-level US-China talks in Washington, where President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met without major breakthroughs on several major disputes. The panda loan was finalized earlier in the year, but the arrival timeline was publicly confirmed only days before the flight. Zoo Atlanta said it had prepared upgraded habitat facilities and arranged a steady bamboo supply to support the bears.

Zoo officials said the pandas will not be immediately visible to the public. They are expected to undergo roughly a month of quarantine in a biosecure area of the zoo’s new panda complex. The zoo said the arrival is significant for Atlanta and the broader region, and it marked the return of pandas to the institution after the previous pair left in 2024.

More broadly, the report places the move within China’s long-running “panda diplomacy,” in which giant pandas are loaned to foreign zoos as a symbol of goodwill and a tool of international engagement. The new agreement makes Atlanta one of three US zoos currently housing giant pandas.
