Ghana: SCC Inmates Commended for 100 Percent Pass in Bece

Juvenile inmates at the Senior Correctional Centre in Accra, Ghana, have been praised after all 11 candidates from the facility passed the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination. According to Ghanaian Times, the students took the exam through the Ghana Education Service’s prison education programme, and some recorded strong overall results, including an aggregate of 12.

The report said the achievement was recognized at a ceremony attended by prison and education officials. Deputy Director of Prisons Yayra Ashong-Mettle, who oversees the SCC, said the outcome reflected the Ghana Prisons Service’s wider focus on reform and rehabilitation. She credited the result to the work of prison officers serving as teachers, as well as help from non-governmental organizations and volunteers.

The inmates studied at Reformers Junior High School inside the correctional centre, where they faced limited resources, tight schedules and the emotional strain of incarceration. Sena Okity-Duah, coordinator of the Free SHS Secretariat at the Ministry of Education, commended the centre and said the result showed the value of education in restoring young offenders’ prospects. She also indicated that eligible inmates could benefit from Ghana’s Free SHS policy if they qualify for senior high school.

The Ghanaian Times report presents the result as an example of how education can support rehabilitation and reintegration for children in conflict with the law, and it highlights continued efforts to expand learning opportunities inside correctional facilities.
