Ghana: Police Seize Suspected Cocaine Worth $6.9m in Gari Sacks

Ghanaian police in Tema have intercepted 866 parcels of a white powder suspected to be cocaine after officers say the drugs were hidden in sacks of gari, a cassava-based staple, and prepared for export from the Tema Harbour area. The seizure was reported by the Tema Regional Police Command and described as part of a broader anti-narcotics effort.

According to Ghanaian Times, three people were arrested at a warehouse in the harbour enclave after intelligence indicated that narcotics were being loaded into a 40-foot container on a DAF truck. The suspects named in the report are a Dutch national, Gilano Horwin, and two Ghanaian men, John Mensah Sabah and Alhaji Iddrisu Haruna. Police said Horwin allegedly admitted the substance was cocaine and claimed ownership during questioning.

In a second operation in the Prampram District, police arrested Eric Tetteh after stopping an Opel taxi carrying four sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at Tsopoli. Officers said a Hyundai H100 bus involved in the movement of the suspected drugs escaped after a pursuit. Police estimated the street value of the cocaine seizure at $6.928 million and said the exhibits have been retained for forensic testing.

The report says the command is continuing efforts to identify other suspects and trace the vehicle that fled. It also reflects the wider challenge faced by Ghanaian authorities as they intensify intelligence-led policing against drug trafficking through transport and port routes.
