Ghana held the maiden annual public lecture in honour of the late Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang among the government officials, religious leaders and other dignitaries who attended in Accra on Tuesday, according to Ghanaian Times as republished by AllAfrica. Speakers used the occasion to call for ethical leadership and a stronger public-service culture. Acting Defence Minister and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson described Omane Boamah as a committed patriot who helped strengthen public institutions and supported efforts to build a more professional Ghana Armed Forces. The first lecture was delivered by Very Rev. Fr Ebenezer Akesseh of Christ the King Catholic Church, who framed public service as a duty to society rather than a path to personal gain and praised the late minister’s humility, honesty and willingness to help others.

The lecture also broadened into wider governance concerns. Professor Kwasi Appeaning Addo of the University of Ghana’s Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences argued that Accra’s flooding problem requires more than emergency response, pointing instead to weak enforcement of planning rules, illegal building on waterways, poor waste management and wetland loss. He called for better urban planning, stronger regulation and greater use of technology to monitor development. The discussion underscored how remembrance of a public figure was paired with practical calls on leadership and city resilience.
