Ghana: Ghana Loses Over U.S.$3bn Annually to Corruption - NCCE

What the report says
Ghana is losing more than US$3 billion each year to corruption, according to Samuel Asare Akuamoah, Deputy Chairman for Operations at the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). The figure was shared in Accra during opening remarks at a Youth Leaders Empowerment Dialogue on civic engagement, the rule of law and anti-corruption efforts, held last Friday and reported by Ghanaian Times via AllAfrica.
Akuamoah said the money lost through corruption could instead support infrastructure, jobs and basic public services. He argued that fighting corruption should not be left to state bodies alone and called on young people to treat the issue as a civic responsibility. He also urged youth leaders to move beyond attending workshops and to take practical steps that demand accountability.
Transparency International Ghana Executive Director Mary Addah also addressed the forum. She encouraged young people to take a lead role in anti-corruption work and said Ghana’s progress on the Corruption Perceptions Index has remained stagnant between 2020 and 2024, which she described as a troubling sign. Her comments, as reported, stressed that laws and institutions are not enough unless they are reflected in everyday conduct.
Panelists at the dialogue further encouraged participants to use social media, community outreach and civic education clubs to promote accurate information and public oversight. They also highlighted the need for better understanding of the constitution, procurement rules, the national budget, public financial management and the Right to Information Act.
