Ghana: Gh¢100m Fund to Drive Agricultural Transformation Launched

Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has launched a GH¢100 million agricultural fund called the Ghana Agriculture Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET), according to Ghanaian Times as distributed by AllAfrica. The announcement was made in Accra on 12 August 2026 and is part of the government’s broader agricultural transformation agenda.

The fund is designed to create a long-term national endowment to support skills development, innovation, mechanisation and agricultural enterprise. It is also meant to back institutions that train agricultural engineers, researchers, agribusiness leaders and entrepreneurs. Opoku argued that modernising farming will require not only equipment, irrigation and financing, but also better-trained people able to design, operate and maintain those systems.

The minister linked GAFET to the Feed Ghana Programme, which aims to raise production, modernise farming, expand irrigation and mechanisation, promote agro-processing and reduce food imports. He also said many agricultural colleges and research centres need new investment in laboratories, workshops, demonstration farms, digital tools and updated curricula. The report says the fund will be open to contributions from private companies, development partners, banks, philanthropies, alumni and individuals.

GAFET’s coordinators said the initiative will support 21 institutions and has already drawn an initial GH¢3.5 million from five agribusiness firms. Its targets are to reach GH¢10 million by December 2026 and GH¢100 million by December 2028, under a governance structure including an independent administrator, fund manager, custodian bank and external auditor.
