Ghana: A Garment Hub Puts Northern Ghana To Work

Bird Story Agency, in a report published by AllAfrica, says the Northshore Apparel Hub in Savelugu in Ghana’s Northern Region is beginning to reshape formal employment in the area. The wholly Ghanaian-owned garment plant was officially commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama on August 28, 2026, and is presented as part of Ghana’s broader 24-Hour Economy programme. The factory is already operating and, according to the report, is creating wage jobs close to home for young people who might otherwise have searched for work in southern cities.

The article highlights the experience of Kausara Alhassan, a 23-year-old University for Development Studies graduate who said she found work at the factory after years of unsuccessful job applications in Tamale. Northshore says it currently runs 51 production lines and employs more than 2,300 workers, most of them women. The company also reports that about 80% of available jobs are reserved for women and vulnerable groups, and that the site includes a crèche, clinic, canteen and some positions for students from the Savelugu School for the Deaf.

Mahama used the inauguration to frame the project as part of efforts to reduce the long-running concentration of higher-paying industrial jobs in southern Ghana. The report says he sees the hub as a possible employment centre for Northern Ghana, with a planned expansion that could eventually raise employment significantly. Northshore has also secured WRAP certification, which may help it attract international buyers.

The story notes that the company currently relies on imported fabric, but it hopes later phases will include a cotton facility, fabric mill and outgrower scheme. If those plans are realized, the hub could support a wider local value chain linking farmers, processors and garment makers in the north.
