Gen. Muhoozi Returns Home After Two-Day Visit to Kigali

Watchdog Uganda reported that Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, returned from Kigali after a two-day working visit to Rwanda. The outlet said the trip centered on a meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame, with discussions focused on stronger Uganda-Rwanda cooperation, regional peace and security, and closer ties between the neighboring states.

According to the report, Kainerugaba’s engagements in Rwanda have become part of the wider improvement in relations between Kampala and Kigali following a period of diplomatic tension that affected trade and movement across the border. Watchdog Uganda noted that Kagame has previously credited Kainerugaba with helping rebuild trust between the two governments.

The visit also included stops at development and urban projects in Kigali. Watchdog Uganda said Kainerugaba toured the King Faisal Hospital Expansion Project, Nyandungu Eco Park and the Parklane Estate residential development, accompanied by Kigali Mayor Sam Dusengiyumva. He also met NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi to discuss basketball development in Uganda, including the possibility of a Junior NBA League linked to Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports.

At the end of the visit, the report said Kainerugaba was seen off at Kigali International Airport by Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, alongside RDF Republican Guard Commander Maj. Gen. Willy Rwagasana and Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Rwanda, Col. Ezekiel Matsiko. The trip matters because it signals continued high-level military and political engagement between Uganda and Rwanda after years of strained relations.
