What the report says

Uganda is using the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi to push for closer trade and investment ties with India, according to Nile Post. Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Samvidhan Sadan on the sidelines of the forum, which is scheduled for October 26 and 27, 2026.

Oboth said Uganda wants greater access for its products in the Indian market and more investment in domestic processing, with the aim of expanding exports and adding value at home. Nile Post reported that he pointed to longstanding links between the two countries and noted that their two-way trade is about $1.35 billion a year. The forum is bringing together parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner states to discuss institutional resilience, innovation, international cooperation and sustainable development.

Uganda became a BRICS partner country in 2025, giving it another channel for engagement with the bloc. The delegation is also expected to take part in wider discussions on digital innovation and human-centred artificial intelligence, alongside talks on governance and development. The paper said the visit fits into Uganda’s broader parliamentary diplomacy efforts to strengthen international relations and identify opportunities for trade, investment and cooperation.

Oboth was accompanied by several MPs, including Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, as part of the Ugandan delegation.
