Gambia: 112 Victims Received Full Compensation As Government Spends D24.8 Million On Reparations

The Gambia’s justice minister told the National Assembly that the government has paid D24.8 million in compensation to victims of human rights violations linked to the Yahya Jammeh era. The update was given on Thursday, 10 September 2026, in response to questions from Wuli East lawmaker Suwaibou Touray about how many victims have received reparations, how many are still waiting and how the remaining cases will be handled.

According to Minister Dawda Jallow, the Reparations Commission had completed full compensation for 112 victims or their families as of 7 September 2026. He said 91 of those beneficiaries were men and 21 were women. He also said payments are being handled in chronological order, starting with violations from 1994, and that compensation for another 200 victims whose cases fall between 1994 and 2001 has already been processed and approved.

Jallow said the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) identified 1,009 victims and made initial pro-rata payments covering about 19% of assessed liabilities, with later settlement of the balance left to the Reparations Commission. Based on the current full payments, he said 897 victims still have outstanding balances, though the number could rise because the commission is still registering people not previously recognized by the TRRC.

The minister also said the reparations program includes non-cash support. Through its medical board, it has provided rehabilitation, mental health, psychosocial and general medical assistance to more than 100 victims. He added that future payments will depend on available funds and replenishment of the reparations account at the Central Bank of The Gambia.
