Football world mourns Tenerife striker De Miguel

What the report says
The football community has been paying tribute to Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel after he died following a collision during a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra. According to BBC Sport, the incident happened on Monday when De Miguel was involved in a heavy challenge with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. He was initially described as stable but serious, but his condition worsened and he died on Tuesday morning, with the club confirming the news later that day.
A minute’s silence was observed before Tuesday’s Champions League matches, and BBC Sport reported that tributes will also be held at Wednesday’s fixtures, plus all Europa League and Conference League games this week. At Tenerife’s home stadium, supporters laid flowers and candles beneath a large image of the player. The club said it would begin six days of official mourning, suspend activities, and open its ground on Saturday so fans can say farewell. De Miguel’s funeral is due to take place in Navahermosa, Toledo.
The report said police in Spain have opened an investigation, although a prosecutor told EFE that criminal proceedings were very unlikely. The referee sent off Owono before abandoning the match. Beyond the immediate football response, several players and coaches, including Mikel Arteta, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Nadal and Raphinha, posted messages of condolence. De Miguel had joined Tenerife in 2025 and had helped the club win promotion to the second division.
