Emery takes positives, but Villa 'have work to do' to reach Barca level

What the report says
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery said his side still have work to do to reach Barcelona’s level after a 3-0 Champions League defeat at the Spotify Nou Camp. BBC Sport reported that Villa started brightly in Spain and created chances in the first half, but a mistake in their own half helped Barcelona break the deadlock through Lamine Yamal before Raphinha added two second-half goals to settle the match.
The result ended Villa’s perfect start to the Champions League league phase after three wins, though Emery framed the night as a useful measure of how far his team have come under his leadership. Villa have improved markedly since Emery took charge, and the trip to Barcelona was presented as a test against one of Europe’s established sides. The Spanish club, who have won most of their matches this season, also moved above Villa in the standings.
Emery said his team competed well at times but needed to be more clinical in attack and stronger in key moments. Captain John McGinn gave a similar assessment, describing the game as a learning experience and saying Villa can take encouragement from how they have performed against top opposition in Europe.
The defeat may not damage Villa’s wider progress, but it highlighted the gap that still exists between them and elite Champions League sides. Villa now turn their attention back to domestic fixtures, with a Premier League trip to Manchester United next.
