Five arrested after South African farmer shot and tortured

What the report says
South African police have arrested five people in connection with a violent attack on cattle farmer Donovan Marx in Ventersdorp, a small town in North West province. According to Nile Post’s report, Marx was assaulted during a house robbery last Wednesday after being ambushed as he returned home. Police said the attackers shot and stabbed him and cut off his ears during the ordeal.
The article says the suspects allegedly first confronted a farm worker, tied the worker up with cable ties, and asked where Marx was. When Marx arrived, two suspects reportedly shot him in the upper body, dragged him inside, tied him up and stabbed him before ransacking the house. The group then allegedly stole firearms from a safe and fled in Marx’s van. Marx survived and was taken to hospital, where he remains.
Family members welcomed the arrests and said they want the legal process to continue. South Africa’s Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp condemned the attack, while a parliamentary police committee chair praised the swift police action and called for a strong case. The suspects, aged 26 to 56, are expected in court on charges including house robbery, attempted murder and illegal firearm possession.
The report also placed the case in the wider context of debate over farm attacks in South Africa. It noted that some right-wing groups have used such incidents to advance discredited claims about violence against white farmers, although those claims have been rejected by political parties in the country.
