NWSC to Connect One Million More People as Katosi Water Network Expansion Advances

What the report says
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) says its ongoing Katosi water network expansion is meant to extend reliable supply to about one million more people across Greater Kampala. According to the company, the project is at an advanced stage and is intended to ease shortages in communities that have long faced inconsistent water service, even though the Katosi Water Treatment Plant can produce 160 million litres a day.
NWSC said the works include laying 69 kilometres of transmission mains, building reservoirs at Kanyanya, Kabulengwa and Mutungo, and installing booster stations at Kungu and Kabulengwa. The corporation is also upgrading its SCADA monitoring system to improve control of the distribution network. Areas expected to benefit include Kira, Kasangati, Namugongo, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa, Gayaza, Matugga, Kawempe, Nansana and Wakiso, among others.
The utility said the project is designed to support growing demand linked to urban expansion and to make better use of existing production capacity. It also said some improvements should be felt before full completion, with the Namugongo-Kasangati pipeline due for commissioning in January 2027 and the overall project scheduled to finish in August 2027.
NWSC also addressed complaints about excavation damage, saying road and walkway reinstatement is part of the contract and will begin progressively as sections are completed. The corporation has been coordinating with local authorities and the Ministry of Works and Transport to reduce disruption while construction continues.
