Eurogamer reports that Square Enix has detailed the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14, confirming the MMO is scheduled to launch on 4 August and that pre-orders have opened. The port, first announced in April, is positioned as a major addition to the Switch 2 lineup and will include the game’s well-known free trial, giving new players access to a substantial amount of content before committing to a subscription.

A notable caveat is storage: according to the US eShop information cited by Eurogamer, the Switch 2 release will require 117.2 GB at launch, making it an especially large download for Nintendo’s hybrid console. Eurogamer also notes that the Switch 2 edition will not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, but it will require a separate Final Fantasy 14 monthly subscription from other platforms, even when using the same account. Players paying for two subscriptions will receive a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 one.

The news came alongside announcements from Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, where Square Enix showed an extended teaser trailer for Evercold, the next expansion due in early 2027. The expansion will begin the Godless Realms Saga and introduce Bastion, a tank job that uses paired greatshields called skyltborg.

Eurogamer also reported several other Final Fantasy 14 updates from the event, including an Evangelion collaboration titled Ghosts of Desire, a new data centre system intended to improve connectivity and same-region matchmaking, and a planned crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
