Fighting re-erupts in Yemen and civilians are paying the price

Fighting between Yemen’s Houthi movement and the internationally recognised government has intensified again this month, reversing a period of relative calm that followed the UN-brokered truce in April 2022. In reporting from Taiz and nearby districts, Al Jazeera said the renewed clashes have driven widespread displacement, with civilians describing hurried escapes from front-line camps and a scramble to find shelter, food and medical support.

The outlet said more than 900 people have been killed or injured in less than a week, while at least 5,000 families have fled their homes. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also reported that roughly 46,000 people have been displaced since the latest clashes began. Al Jazeera’s reporting focused on families in Taiz’s al-Kadaha and al-Maafer areas, where many displaced people are staying in makeshift tents, under trees, or with relatives after leaving belongings, livestock and livelihoods behind.

Local aid workers and camp managers told Al Jazeera that existing humanitarian resources are already stretched and cannot meet the surge in needs.
