Fed holds interest rates steady, but three officials dissent in favor of a hike - uk.finance.yahoo.com
What the report says
Yahoo Finance reported that the Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged on Wednesday, marking the fifth straight policy meeting this year without a move. The decision kept the target range at 3.5% to 3.75%, but it was not unanimous: Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack voted against the hold and favored a quarter-point increase.
According to the report, policymakers did not revise their statement, continuing to describe inflation as elevated amid higher energy prices linked to renewed Middle East tensions. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said after the meeting that output, capital spending, productivity and the labor market remained solid, while emphasizing that the central bank’s inflation goal is still 2% and not a looser, unofficial threshold.
The article said recent inflation data had offered mixed signals. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, eased to 2.6% in June from 2.9% the prior month, while headline inflation fell to 3.5% from 4.2% as gasoline prices dropped sharply. But Yahoo noted that oil prices had moved higher again, raising officials’ concerns about whether energy shocks could spread into broader price pressures.
The split matters because it points to a more divided Fed as officials weigh persistent inflation against steady economic growth. Yahoo reported that several policymakers had indicated support for holding rates before the meeting, while also leaving open the possibility of a future hike if inflation fails to cool.
