Families in Thailand have begun collecting the bodies of victims after a shooting rampage at a school and a nearby home on the outskirts of Bangkok, according to Al Jazeera’s report on Aug. 8, 2026. The death toll rose to nine after a 12-year-old girl died in hospital, bringing the total to include five school staff members, the teenage shooter and his grandparents.

Officials said a 14-year-old student opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province, northwest of the capital, shortly after 10 a.m. local time on Friday. Authorities also said he had likely killed his two grandparents earlier that morning at their home. The bodies were transferred to Thailand’s Institute of Forensic Medicine before being taken for funeral rites.

Sixteen people remained hospitalized, including seven in critical condition, and most of the wounded were children aged 12 to 14. Thai officials said the firearm was legally registered to the boy’s grandfather. Investigators are still reviewing forensic evidence, including toxicology results.

The attack has intensified debate over gun control in Thailand, which already has one of the region’s highest rates of civilian gun ownership. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he plans to propose tighter rules on carrying firearms. The school suspended classes for several days, while mourners left flowers at the entrance as the community reacted with shock.
