‘Extremely brave’: How teenage lifeguard rescued young boy from violent surf in Santa Cruz - San Francisco Chronicle

What the report says
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a 16-year-old lifeguard rescued a 10-year-old boy from dangerous surf Saturday at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, in a rescue captured on video and widely shared online. The lifeguard has been identified by family, via the California Post, as Ryder Williams, a high school junior who was back at work Tuesday.
According to the Chronicle, experts who reviewed the footage said the teenager showed unusual composure in violent water. Tom Gill, president of the United States Lifesaving Association, said the lifeguard appeared to use training and judgment by holding the boy securely and going under breaking waves rather than trying to fight every surge at the surface. Wyatt Werneth of the American Lifeguard Association said the rescue went beyond what would typically be expected of a first-year teenage lifeguard.
The boy’s father, Sumit Rai, told the Chronicle his son, visiting California from Dallas with his mother and sister, said he had lost consciousness during the incident. Rai credited the lifeguard with saving the child’s life. Witness Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the rescue, wrote on social media that the outcome could have been very different with only slight changes in timing or distance.
The incident has drawn national attention, including President Donald Trump’s statement that he planned to honor the teenager at the White House. The Chronicle also reported that advocates see the rescue as a chance to highlight lifeguards’ role as public-safety responders and to support broader recognition, including a House resolution that would classify lifeguards as first responders.
