DW reported that at least eight people were killed overnight as Russia launched a broad missile and drone attack across Ukraine, including a deadly strike on Kyiv early Thursday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned beforehand that Russian forces were likely to carry out a major assault, citing a report from Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko. Zelenskyy later said Russia fired 70 rockets and 280 drones and that at least 10 Ukrainian regions were hit.

In Kyiv, the city military administration confirmed at least one death. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said ballistic missiles were used against the capital and urged residents to remain in shelters as the danger of further strikes continued. Officials said several nonresidential sites in Kyiv caught fire, while Reuters and AFP reported hearing explosions in the city.

DW also cited local officials in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, who said six people were killed, including two girls aged 5 and 12, when an Iskander-M ballistic missile hit a private home in a village on the city’s outskirts. In Lviv, near the Polish border, officials said missiles damaged two apartment buildings and injured six people. Poland’s armed forces said it scrambled fighter jets and put air defense and radar systems on alert as a preventive measure during the Russian strikes.

The attacks came as Zelenskyy renewed calls for more air defense support from Ukraine’s allies, saying protection of civilians depends on partners’ readiness to provide missiles. DW also reported that Ukraine continued drone strikes inside Russia, including at a Wildberries warehouse in Penza, which Ukraine says supports Russian military logistics.
