What the report says

Ars Technica reports that SpaceX’s 13th Starship test flight showed meaningful progress toward the company’s ambitions for the giant reusable rocket, including a controlled return through the atmosphere and ocean landing after launch on Friday. But the report says the vehicle’s thermal protection system remains a major unresolved issue for the goal of rapid, low-cost reuse.

The concern centers on Starship’s roughly 18,000 ceramic heat-shield tiles. Ars cites Dan Rasky, a former NASA Ames engineer and co-inventor of the PICA material used on Crew Dragon, who described the current tile-based approach as unsuitable for missions requiring complete and fast reuse. Rasky, former NASA astronaut Charles Camarda and space industry official Charles Miller argue that while Flight 13 lost only a small number of tiles, video of the recovered vehicle showed white streaking near tile boundaries and signs of tile damage, suggesting refurbishment and inspection would still be needed.

Ars notes that SpaceX has advantages over the Space Shuttle, including Starship’s stainless-steel structure, which can tolerate more heating than the shuttle’s aluminum frame. The company is also aware of the problem: Elon Musk has publicly called the reusable heat shield one of Starship’s hardest remaining challenges, and SpaceX has been testing revised materials and tile designs through its flight campaign.

The broader issue is whether Starship can move beyond being reusable in principle to being rapidly turned around in days or weeks. Ars reports that the experts believe the current system may support near-term Starlink deployment but may fall short for very high launch-rate goals tied to lunar or Mars settlement and other large-scale space projects. They also said NASA has not made major recent investments in new low-Earth-orbit reentry heat-shield research.
