The choice is notable because many viewers had expected Sofia to host. Burgas mayor Dimitar Nikolov called it a major honour. The report also noted that Eurovision host cities can see a wider economic and promotional impact, citing recent examples from Liverpool, Malmö and Basel. Separately, contest organisers have recently updated rules so that countries involved in armed conflict may be barred from hosting the following year, a change widely viewed in the context of broader political tensions around the competition.
