AllAfrica, carrying a report from the Ethiopian News Agency, reported on 30 July 2026 from Addis Ababa that Ethiopia and Kenya are broadening bilateral cooperation across several sectors. The report cited Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, who told ENA that the two countries’ longstanding relationship is expected to deepen through regional connectivity, energy links and private-sector investment.

Mudavadi pointed to the LAPSSET Corridor program as a major example of the expanding partnership. According to the ENA report, the initiative involves Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan and is intended to strengthen access to ports and transport routes in the region. He said plans include expansion of the Port of Lamu and related infrastructure that could give Ethiopia an additional route to the sea while also supporting wider regional integration.

The report also highlighted energy cooperation. Mudavadi said Kenya has signed power purchase and supply arrangements with Ethiopia, allowing Kenya to import electricity generated from Ethiopian hydropower projects. He added that transmission infrastructure has been built to move power from Ethiopia into Kenya, with some lines extending toward Tanzania, underscoring growing interconnection among East African economies.

On business ties, Mudavadi cited Safaricom’s investment in Ethiopia as evidence of increasing private-sector confidence linked to improved relations. The development matters because Ethiopia, a landlocked country, has long prioritized diversified trade corridors and power exports, while Kenya is positioning itself as a regional transport, energy and investment hub.
