Ethiopia: As Tens of Thousands Flee Ethiopia to Kenya, UN Agency Warns of Growing Humanitarian Needs

What the report says
The UN Refugee Agency says humanitarian pressure is rising along the Kenya-Ethiopia border after renewed clashes on the Ethiopian side pushed large numbers of people into Kenya seeking safety. In reporting from Geneva, AllAfrica said cross-border movement has been especially significant at Moyale since Oct. 22, with local authorities estimating as many as 50,000 arrivals. UNHCR said the total remains uncertain because registration and verification are still under way and more people may still be crossing.
According to the agency, many of those fleeing are women and children. Some are staying with relatives or in host communities, while others have been sheltering in temporary spaces such as schools and churches. UNHCR representative in Kenya Fatima Mohammed-Cole said the most urgent needs include food, safe drinking water, emergency shelter, sanitation and health care.
UNHCR said it has sent an emergency team to Moyale and is working with the Kenyan government and partners including IOM, UNICEF, the World Food Programme and the Kenya Red Cross. It is also mobilizing relief supplies for nearly 12,000 people while assessments continue. The situation matters because it highlights the strain caused by conflict-driven displacement and the risk of a broader regional humanitarian emergency if arrivals continue.
