Ethiopia: 18th BRICS Summit Concludes With Adoption of New Delhi Declaration

The 18th BRICS Summit ended in New Delhi with the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, according to the Ethiopian News Agency report distributed by AllAfrica. The summit was held under India’s presidency on September 12-13, 2026, and focused on cooperation, inclusive development and efforts to build a more representative international order.

The declaration, as described in the report, restates BRICS principles such as mutual respect, sovereign equality, solidarity, openness, inclusiveness and consensus. It also sets priorities for future cooperation, with an emphasis on resilience, innovation, sustainable development and broader economic collaboration among member and partner countries.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took part in the summit and used the occasion to call for deeper BRICS engagement with Africa. The report says he highlighted Ethiopia’s interest in expanding cooperation in minerals, renewable energy and manufacturing, and urged that capital, technology and markets be linked in ways that create more value in resource-producing countries.

On the sidelines, Abiy held bilateral meetings with several leaders, including India’s Narendra Modi, Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian, Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, China’s Xi Jinping and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The report also notes a closed BRICS session on global governance, where leaders discussed reform of the UN system, the international financial architecture and the multilateral trading system.
