What the report says

The African Development Bank Group has launched the African Water Facility’s 2026-2030 strategy during Cairo Water Week in Egypt, according to AllAfrica’s source article from the African Development Bank. The initiative is aimed at strengthening preparation and financing for water and sanitation projects across the continent, with a renewed appeal for African governments to increase their own contributions and for private investors to take a larger role.

The African Water Facility, created by the African Ministers’ Council on Water and managed by the African Development Bank Group, helps countries move projects toward bankability through feasibility studies, technical designs and other preparatory work. The strategy was presented on 27 October at a high-level advocacy event co-chaired by Egypt and Senegal. Cairo Water Week ran from 25 to 29 October under the theme of water as a driver of peace, shared prosperity and sustainability.

The strategy is intended to support the African Union’s Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy, as well as the bank’s broader development priorities. It identifies a five-year funding need of EUR 75 million to 120 million for the facility and separately points to USD 300 million to capitalise the African Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative. The bank said the plan is designed to help countries secure public and private investment for water-security projects.

The article also notes broader engagement with development partners and businesses at the Cairo meetings, including interest from the German Water Partnership. The discussions form part of wider preparations for upcoming global water events, including the 2026 UN Water Conference and the 2027 World Water Forum.
