Ebola’s cross-border spread tests Africa’s defenses as vaccine trial begins

What the report says
Ebola response efforts across Africa are under strain as the virus continues to cross borders, according to The Independent Uganda’s report based on Xinhua material. The article says the outbreak has affected several countries, with Kenya confirming a second death and Nigeria working to determine how its first confirmed case was infected. At the same time, a vaccine trial has begun in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the epidemic remains the continent’s most serious current outbreak.
In Kenya, health authorities said a 65-year-old woman linked to the first confirmed patient died after being in quarantine and treatment. Officials reported that the country’s cases remain tied to that initial cluster and that contact tracing has been completed for those exposed. In Nigeria, officials cited genomic findings suggesting the virus in its lone confirmed case is closely related to Kenya’s first imported case, while investigators continued to examine conflicting accounts of the patient’s travel history.
Uganda has responded by tightening entry and transit rules for travelers with recent DRC exposure, reinstating locator forms and reinforcing screening at borders and health facilities. The WHO, however, continues to advise against broad travel or trade restrictions, urging stronger surveillance and faster detection instead. The report says a Phase 2/3 vaccine trial began in Bunia, in eastern DRC’s Ituri province, aiming to test vaccine candidates against the Bundibugyo virus. The effort matters because no vaccine is yet approved specifically for this strain, and ongoing insecurity and displacement are complicating the wider response.
