Al Jazeera, citing AFP and Reuters, reported that a drone exploded in Bulgaria near the Kardam border crossing close to Romania and the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, while German authorities said two drones were seen near a military base in Mechernich in North Rhine-Westphalia and another was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

In Bulgaria, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the explosion happened about a kilometre from a compressor station linked to the pipeline, which connects Turkiye to Ukraine. He said there were no casualties. In Germany, military personnel and police were said to be investigating the sightings, and media reports described the Mechernich site as important for equipment storage and maintenance connected to US Patriot air defence systems.

The incidents come amid broader unease over repeated drone incursions and other aerial threats in Europe. German officials did not publicly assign blame, but some politicians accused Russia. NATO and EU figures have previously linked similar incidents to Moscow, while Russia has denied responsibility and called the Leipzig case a provocation. The reports matter because they have intensified debate over how prepared European states are for security risks linked to the Ukraine war.
