Dragon Age series producer says he doesn’t see it returning because of EA’s greenlighting process - Video Games Chronicle

Video Games Chronicle reports that longtime BioWare developer Mark Darrah, a former executive producer on Dragon Age, has expressed doubt that the fantasy RPG series will return soon. Speaking in an interview with FRVR, Darrah said BioWare’s current focus on the next Mass Effect game, combined with Electronic Arts’ internal process for approving projects based on existing franchises, makes a new Dragon Age difficult to imagine in the near term.

Darrah, who spent 23 years at BioWare, described EA as holding many unused intellectual properties and suggested that attempts to revive them can run into internal resistance from multiple stakeholders who believe they have authority over a given brand. In his view, BioWare would be the most likely group to propose another Dragon Age, but he questioned who at the studio would currently be positioned to do so. He also suggested that an attempt by another EA team to pitch Dragon Age could face pushback from within BioWare.

The comments come after Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched in 2024, marking the series’ first new main release since 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition. VGC notes that BioWare is now working on a new Mass Effect, which was announced in December 2020. Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble said last year that the project remained in development and that EA and BioWare were still committed to the franchise.

VGC also reported that EA reduced BioWare’s size in early 2025 after The Veilguard’s release, with BioWare general manager Gary McKay saying some staff had been moved to other EA teams because the next Mass Effect did not need support from the full studio.
