Daily Express journalist Asiteza applies for bail

Jailed Daily Express journalist Remmy Asiteza has asked the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court to grant him bail as he faces charges of publishing fake news and broadcasting without a licence, according to The Observer. He appeared before chief magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa on Wednesday with three proposed sureties presented by his lawyers, led by Yasin Ssentumbwe Munagomba.

The sureties named in court were Asiteza’s friends Samuel Kizito, a software developer; Emmanuel Adowa, a surveyor; and Irene Rukundo, a reservation and IT manager. His legal team asked the magistrate to release him on lenient terms after explaining the responsibilities tied to suretyship. Prosecutors, led by chief state attorney Joan Keko, requested time to review the bail papers and prepare a response.

The magistrate adjourned the matter to September 21, 2026, when the prosecution is expected to answer the application. The charges arise from an alleged Daily Express website story published between July 7 and 8, 2026, which prosecutors say falsely linked minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda to corruption in a recruitment scandal. A separate count alleges that Asiteza and others operated or broadcast through the Daily Express website without a licence from the Uganda Communications Commission. Asiteza has denied the charges.
