What the report says

Coventry City is investigating an incident at its match against Sunderland after video on social media appeared to show a supporter taunting the home fans with an image of Bradley Lowery, the late Sunderland supporter who became widely known during his cancer battle. Al Jazeera reported that the footage circulated after Sunderland’s 3-1 defeat on Saturday, and British media said a 14-year-old boy later handed himself in to West Midlands police as officers reviewed the material.

The club said it was aware of the footage and would work with the relevant authorities to decide what should happen next. It added that it does not accept offensive behaviour. Sunderland did not publicly comment on the incident in the report.

Lowery died in 2017 at age six after living with a rare cancer. His mother, Gemma Lowery, said the episode was deeply upsetting, while also urging people not to direct hatred at the young fan and instead to help him understand why the act was hurtful. The Bradley Lowery Foundation, which supports children and families affected by serious illness, also appeared in the response.

The episode prompted anger online, but it also led to donations to the foundation and messages stressing that one supporter’s conduct should not define Coventry City. More broadly, the case highlights how football clubs and police may respond to discriminatory or mocking behaviour that spreads quickly on social media after matches.
