Congo-Kinshasa: New Ebola Vaccine Trial Launches As Outbreak Spreads in DR Congo

The World Health Organization says research efforts are advancing in response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, even though trial results are expected to take months. According to UN News, this includes work on what it describes as the first vaccine candidate aimed specifically at the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, alongside studies of treatment and prevention options.

The outbreak, which WHO says is the largest ever recorded in the DRC, had reached 3,748 cases by 1 August, including 1,657 deaths and 708 recoveries. The current response is centered in Ituri province, the outbreak’s epicentre, where clinical trials of a potential post-exposure preventive medicine are underway. The trial is being led by the DRC’s National Institute for Biomedical Research with international research and outbreak-response partners, and more than 25 patients had been enrolled.

WHO said a vaccine trial began in the United Kingdom on 24 July, with a second set to start in Canada. Those early studies are being carried out in animals before any decision on moving forward. A new 100-bed treatment centre has also been opened in Bunia, the capital of Ituri, as health teams expand testing and monitoring sites. The developments matter because Bundibugyo Ebola has not yet had a proven vaccine or treatment, and faster research could improve outbreak control if the candidates prove safe and effective.
