Congo-Kinshasa: Ebola Deaths Top 2,000 As Scientists Race to Develop Vaccine

Local officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo said Ebola deaths have now passed 2,000, with about half of those fatalities recorded in the last 20 days, according to UN News as republished by AllAfrica. The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, was declared by DRC health authorities in mid-May and later classified by the World Health Organization as a public health emergency of international concern.

The report says the outbreak has generated more than 4,000 confirmed cases, making it the second-largest and fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record. It also notes that the death toll is already nearing the total from the 2018-2020 epidemic in the DRC, even though the current crisis is only about three months old. Health workers have raised concern that the virus may be mutating, prompting discussions between African public health officials and WHO leadership.

UN News said there are no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo strain, though vaccine trials have been authorized in Canada and the UK and treatment trials are underway in Ituri province, the epicenter of the outbreak. The response is being complicated by insecurity in eastern DRC, including attacks on Ebola treatment facilities, mistrust of outside authorities, and limited access to healthcare in remote areas.

The UN is also preparing neighboring Rwanda for possible spillover risk, while expanding screening, monitoring, protective equipment, and community outreach. The outbreak matters because the disease is spreading quickly in a conflict-affected region where violence and weak health access are making containment harder.
