Commanders fire TE coach Ben Steele following DWI arrest in Virginia - Yahoo Sports

Yahoo Sports reported that the Washington Commanders have dismissed tight ends coach Ben Steele after his arrest in Virginia on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The team announced Monday that it was parting with Steele and said it would not provide additional comment. Head coach Dan Quinn told reporters Tuesday that Wes Welker, an offensive assistant and former NFL receiver, will take over coaching the tight ends.

According to the Yahoo report, citing The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala, Steele was arrested June 7 in Loudoun County, Virginia. Yahoo also cited ESPN’s John Keim and court records in reporting that Steele faced an additional charge of obstruction/resisting an officer without force related to an alleged refusal to take a blood or breath test at the scene. The report said the Commanders placed Steele on leave after the arrest, notified the NFL, and later released him for a reported violation of team policy.

Steele, 48, had joined Washington in February after three seasons coaching tight ends for the Arizona Cardinals. His prior NFL coaching stops included roles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos, including quality control, tight ends and assistant offensive line duties.

Welker had already worked with Washington’s tight ends during minicamp while Steele was away, according to the report. The change comes during the Commanders’ training camp period, when position-coach continuity can affect installation, player development and roster decisions. Steele previously played in the NFL as an undrafted free agent, including regular-season time with the Green Bay Packers, before moving into coaching.
