Colourful and bold textures on canvas at Tuula Tuwaye exhibition

The Independent Uganda reports that Tuula Tuwaye, a solo exhibition by multimedia artist Herbert Kalule, is now on view at Umoja Art Gallery in Kampala. The show uses vivid color, layered textures and figurative imagery to explore dialogue as a basic human practice and a way people share, learn and respond to the world around them.

According to the article, the concept draws on Buganda traditions of gathering to discuss community issues and find solutions together. Kalule’s paintings feature expressive, caricature-like figures, with women appearing often in the work as symbols of social participation and activism. The artist also uses details such as painted lips and facial expressions to suggest speaking, listening, amusement, confusion, curiosity and affection.

The exhibition includes an installation of old newspapers on the floor, plus a television, radio and chairs arranged in one room. A curatorial note described the show as a response to isolation, arguing that being heard and sharing company can matter even when there are no immediate answers.
