CNOOC Uganda reaffirms environmental commitment ahead of first oil

What the report says
CNOOC Uganda Limited says it is maintaining an environmental focus as Uganda moves closer to first oil. According to The Independent Uganda, the company joined the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, the Uganda National Oil Company, TotalEnergies EP Uganda, EACOP Ltd, government bodies, local leaders and host communities in Kikuube District on Aug. 13 for the 2026 Joint Oil and Gas Sector World Environment Day commemoration.
The event was framed around climate resilience, responsible resource development and sustainable use of petroleum resources. Activities reported by the publisher included tree planting, a solar power system launch at Nsozi Health Centre III in Kyangwali Sub-County and a community clean-up. CNOOC said these efforts were meant to show that oil and gas activity can support environmental conservation while also delivering benefits to host communities.
The company, speaking through Andrew Otuba on behalf of Vice President Wang Jufeng, said environmental stewardship remains central to its work in the Kingfisher Development Area. It said it continues to apply measures on biodiversity protection, water and waste management, and lower-emission operations. The article also notes that CNOOC links its environmental work with community programmes in education, health, water, agriculture and livelihoods.
More broadly, the report places these activities in Uganda’s wider push toward first oil. The company said collaboration with regulators, partners and local communities is necessary to balance petroleum development with environmental protection and long-term economic gains.
