What the report says

A CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds broad dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s priorities, with 73% of U.S. adults saying he has not focused enough on the nation’s most important problems and 27% saying he has emphasized the right issues. CNN reported that Trump’s overall approval stands at 34%, matching the lowest point of his political career, while half of Americans strongly disapprove of his performance and 15% strongly approve.

The survey points to particular weakness on the economy and the war in Iran. About two-thirds of respondents said Trump’s policies have made economic conditions worse and that his military decisions in Iran have harmed the United States. His approval was especially low on Iran, inflation and gas prices, and CNN reported that most Americans now expect a long-term military conflict. Rising gas prices were also a widespread concern, with nearly three-quarters saying they have caused at least some hardship.

CNN also reported signs of softer support inside Trump’s party. His approval among Republicans was measured at 78%, described as a new low for him, and Republican enthusiasm about the remainder of his second term has fallen compared with last spring. On domestic issues, his strongest approval in the poll was 41% on voting rights and election integrity, while immigration and federal government management were also below majority approval.

The poll additionally found public unease about Trump’s Washington projects and business interests. Majorities expressed negative views of construction efforts such as a White House ballroom and changes around federal landmarks, and more than six in 10 said he has gone too far in pursuing personal business interests while president.
