Claude Chats Popped Up in Google Search Results. How to See If Yours Are Public - PCMag UK

What the report says
PCMag reported that publicly shared conversations from Anthropic’s Claude AI service briefly surfaced in Google search results over the weekend, after a Reddit user found that searching for Claude’s shared-chat URL path displayed hundreds of conversations. The visible results reportedly included unusual prompts and some user first names or handles, raising privacy concerns among users who may not have expected shared links to become searchable.
Anthropic told PCMag that Claude’s sharing feature is optional and creates a public link that anyone with access can view. The company said it does not provide search engines with chat directories or sitemaps and suggested that indexing likely happened when users posted shared Claude links on public websites, forums or social platforms. Google also told PCMag that pages made public on the web can be indexed by multiple search engines, while site owners have tools to control crawling and indexing.
PCMag noted that Anthropic uses a robots.txt rule intended to block crawling of the Claude share path, but Google’s own guidance says a blocked URL can still be discovered and indexed if it is linked elsewhere online. The report said searches for the Claude shared-chat path later stopped returning results, suggesting the exposure was short-lived. One user who attempted to archive the results reportedly recovered 519 conversations, indicating the scale may have been limited.
For users concerned about their own Claude content, PCMag said Anthropic provides controls under Settings, then Privacy, then Your Data, where users can review shared chats and artifacts and revoke access. The incident matters because it highlights a recurring issue for AI chat tools: “share” links can make private-seeming conversations publicly accessible once posted on the open web.
