PCMag reported that publicly shared conversations from Anthropic’s Claude AI service briefly appeared in Google search results over the weekend, raising fresh concerns about how users understand AI chat-sharing tools. The issue was flagged Saturday by a Reddit user who found that searching Google for pages under “claude.ai/share” surfaced hundreds of shared chats, some tied to a first name or user handle and containing sensitive or embarrassing topics.

According to PCMag, Anthropic said its sharing feature is optional and creates a public link only when a user chooses to share a conversation. The company said it does not provide Google or other search engines with chat directories or sitemaps, and suggested the indexed links likely became discoverable after users posted them on public websites, forums or social platforms. Google similarly told PCMag that search engines do not decide what pages are made public, and said the pages had appeared across multiple search engines.

The article noted that Anthropic’s robots.txt file blocks crawling of its shared-chat path, but Google’s own guidance says blocked URLs can still be indexed if they are linked elsewhere online. PCMag said the apparent exposure may have been limited, citing one user who recovered 519 indexed conversations. Searches for the same Claude share path later stopped returning results.

PCMag advised Claude users who are concerned to review shared content in Claude settings under Privacy and “Your Data,” where access to shared chats and artifacts can be revoked. The episode follows similar scrutiny of public-link features in AI products, including a prior controversy involving ChatGPT shared chats appearing in Google results.
