NBCSports.com’s Pro Football Talk reported that former quarterback and analyst Chris Simms offered new details Monday about injuries suffered by San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan in a serious car crash. The team announced on July 25 that Shanahan had been in the July 14 accident, a disclosure that came as training camp opened and after the matter had remained public for 11 days.

According to NBCSports.com, Simms said on PFT Live that he learned of the crash from Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, who contacted Simms and his wife and shared images from the aftermath. Simms described the injuries as severe, referencing the team’s injury information: broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken left hand, about 40 facial stitches and a significant concussion. He said Shanahan narrowly avoided a potentially more serious eye injury and remains affected by concussion symptoms, though his facial injuries have improved.

Simms also said Shanahan was shaken by how much worse the crash could have been and was concerned about the woman involved in the accident. NBCSports.com reported that Shanahan initially expected the concussion effects to fade quickly, but after several days became worried that he was not thinking or functioning normally.

The report said Shanahan will take part in 49ers training camp on a limited basis until he is fully cleared from the concussion. He was at about 30 minutes of practice on Sunday. The situation matters for San Francisco because Shanahan is the head coach of a top NFC contender entering camp, and his recovery could affect how he manages early preseason work.
