Candidates Reject Bukomansimbi LC1 Results, Threaten Court Action

Nile Post reported that a group of losing candidates in the recently concluded LC1 chairperson elections in Bukomansimbi District have rejected the announced outcomes and are threatening court action. They allege that the village-level polls were affected by electoral malpractice, intimidation of supporters, confusion over voter registers and failure by officials to follow Electoral Commission procedures.

Among the complainants is Mbetabeitu Bashir, who ran for LC1 chairperson of Kavule A Village in Kyankoole Parish, Butenga Sub-county. According to the report, Bashir claimed the voting process was disrupted after voters who had lined up behind him were allegedly moved to his opponent’s line, and officials later declared the opponent the winner despite the confusion. He also said he reported the matter to Bukomansimbi District Election Officer Betty Komugereko and believes the dispute should now be handled in court.

John Matovu, who contested in Kanoni Village, Butenga Town Council, also challenged the process. Nile Post reported that Matovu accused election officials of colluding with his rival, including claims that the voters’ register was concealed and later found at the home of his opponent’s campaign treasurer. He further alleged that some eligible voters missed out, some names on the register did not belong to residents, and election materials were tampered with during disorder at the polling area.

Bukomansimbi District Returning Officer Betty Komugereko told dissatisfied candidates to use the legal channels available under the law, according to Nile Post. The report said the Electoral Commission had not publicly addressed the specific allegations. The dispute matters because LC1 leaders are the first tier of local governance in Uganda, handling village-level administration and community representation, so contested results can affect local confidence in electoral processes.
