Canada pledges $50m aid to Lebanon and condemns Israeli ‘unlawful invasion’

What the report says
Canada has announced more humanitarian support for Lebanon and used unusually direct language to criticize Israel’s military presence there. According to Al Jazeera, Canada’s secretary of state for international development, Randeep Sarai, visited Lebanon on 19 August 2026 to unveil new programs for families affected by the conflict and to raise Canada’s total aid commitment to Lebanon this year to more than $50m.
During the trip, Sarai condemned what he described as Israel’s “unlawful invasion” of Lebanon and said Beirut should control its own territory. He also visited shelters housing displaced people, including Lebanese families and Syrian refugees, and met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. Canadian officials have previously warned that Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must not be violated.
The announcement comes amid a wider regional escalation and a fragile ceasefire framework involving Lebanon and Israel. Al Jazeera reported that parts of southern Lebanon were designated as pilot zones under a US-mediated agreement signed in late June, while the Lebanese Armed Forces later accused Israel of blocking their deployment in the south.
The aid pledge matters because the war has caused major destruction and displacement in Lebanon, with the United Nations estimating about 360,000 people uprooted. Canada, which has a large Lebanese diaspora, said it has provided roughly $575m in assistance to Lebanon over the past decade.
