81-year-old confesses to German cold case murder of US tourist in 1994

What the report says
A German court has begun hearing a long-running murder case in Koblenz after the accused man admitted killing a US tourist nearly 32 years ago, according to BBC World News. The defendant, identified under German privacy rules as Hans S, is 82 and faces a possible life sentence. BBC reported that he was arrested last February at a retirement home near Koblenz after investigators matched DNA from the victim’s clothing with saliva he had given in a cold-case inquiry.
The victim, Amy Lopez, was 24 and from Texas. She was last seen in September 1994 on her way to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, a tourist site above Koblenz, and her body was found there later the same day. Prosecutors say she was met by chance on the path to the fortress, taken to a secluded area, sexually assaulted and stabbed multiple times. The defendant’s lawyer told the court he accepted responsibility, and the judge asked him to confirm the admission on the first day of trial.
BBC noted that the case had remained unresolved for decades despite earlier forensic work and repeated public appeals. A special cold-case team and improved DNA methods helped revive the investigation, including samples taken from volunteers. The case drew wider attention in Germany after being featured on a national television program about unsolved crimes. A verdict is expected early next month, while the court will still consider psychiatric evidence and other findings before sentencing or final judgment.
