Nile Post reports that ceremonies at Bumutoto Cultural Grounds in Mbale City opened preparations for the 2026 Imbalu circumcision season, with five boys beginning a three-day initiation process. The rituals took place on Thursday and are expected to culminate in a public circumcision ceremony on Saturday, formally launching the biennial cultural season across the Bugisu sub-region.

According to the report, clan elders and cultural custodians led the initiates through symbolic rites, including a procession to a nearby stream to fetch water in clay pots. The water was used to start preparing a traditional brew made with fermented maize flour, while mothers and female relatives prepared soaked yeast on grinding stones. Elders also applied the yeast to the initiates, marking them publicly as participants in the sacred transition.

The boys were then placed under the care of relatives and cultural mentors for instruction, drills, counselling, dancing and community visits before the final ceremony. Nile Post reported that family members are expected to offer blessings and gifts, including livestock, while mothers, sisters, aunts and elder brothers provide emotional and practical support during the preparation period.

Imbalu, practiced by the Bagisu, also known as the Bamasaba, is held in even-numbered years and is a major rite of passage into adulthood. The Nile Post report notes that the event draws cultural leaders, officials, tourists and researchers, and has also become important to cultural tourism and local economic activity in Mbale City and the wider Bugisu area.
