Buddhist monk arrested in suspected $3m embezzlement scandal

Thai police have arrested a prominent Buddhist monk and a suspected female accomplice in a case tied to allegations that donations intended for a major temple in Ayutthaya were siphoned off over a two-year period. The BBC said Phra Wachirayan Wi, formerly the abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan, is suspected of embezzling about 100 million baht, or roughly $3 million, and was later defrocked. He has not publicly responded to the accusations.

According to the BBC, investigators said the money came through donation receipts issued in the temple’s name for renovation work and religious items, but did not reach the temple account. Police also reported finding cash and gold bars during a raid on his residence. The case has drawn added attention because officers said they found video footage showing the monk having sex with a woman at his home, despite the celibacy vow expected of Buddhist monks in Thailand.

Authorities identified the woman as 47-year-old Punyavee Rungrueang, who was arrested on suspicion of helping a state official in illegal activity. Police believe she assisted in handling the alleged proceeds, and they said they have not ruled out involvement by additional people. The investigation began after an anonymous complaint in mid-July.

The case adds to wider scrutiny of misconduct within Thailand’s monastic establishment, which has faced repeated scandals in recent years involving sex, blackmail and financial wrongdoing.
