Brooklyn Roasting Company recalls cold brew sold in New York and New Jersey over botulism risk - Fox Business

Fox Business reported that Brooklyn Roasting Company, a New York-based coffee business, has recalled certain cold brew concentrate products sold in New York and New Jersey because of a potential botulism hazard identified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall covers 2.5-gallon bags of pasteurized cold brew concentrate after the company found that storage at room temperature could allow formation of Clostridium botulinum toxin.

According to the report, the affected products were distributed from April 1 through June 20 and carry best-by dates ranging from June 3 to Sept. 30. Fox Business said no illnesses had been reported in connection with the recalled cold brew as of the article’s publication. The company did not specify the exact distribution locations for the affected products, and Fox Business said Brooklyn Roasting Company did not immediately respond to its request for comment.

The recall matters because botulism, while uncommon, can be life-threatening. The report noted that the toxin affects the nervous system and that foodborne symptoms often appear within 12 to 36 hours. Possible symptoms include difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, stomach upset, breathing problems and paralysis. People who develop symptoms consistent with botulism are advised to seek emergency medical care.

Fox Business also noted that Brooklyn Roasting Company products are sold through its cafés, other coffee shops, gourmet grocery stores, independent markets and online, citing The Patch.
